Problems with dell xps 1330 laptop battery. Battery show 4 lights, but when computer unplugged
from charger, computer shuts down after about 5 sec. Also, when plugged into charger the screen dims. May be a connection connection between the two problems. Biggest issue, of course, the laptop does not run on battery. We've had more problems with this battery issue. MY daughter said that this is her third battery in almost 4 years.
Any help on this issue? Buying a new battery from Dell is not cheap and may not even fix the problem. thanks
computer shows that the battery is charged

(3,655 posts)There seems to be a lot of people having the same problem. The easiest fix looks like a bios update. Lots of people have had the motherboard replaced several times without solving the problem. There are also problems with a sub board that charges the battery. Cooling problems too which somehow affect the charging system. I would try the bios update first. Go to dell to get the file and follow the directions to the letter or you will render your laptop useless. If you aren't computer savy, seek help from someone who is.

(3,270 posts)When in Windows, does the battery charging indicator say "fully charged (100%)" when you hover over it? If you have the Dell utilities installed, you should see a graphical indicator that you can leave up when you unplug it from the AC power supply. Does it ever display less than 90% before it shuts down? Does it perform a full shutdown or does it power off like it lost power? Does Windows say it was improperly shutdown on boot up?
If you do attempt to buy a new battery, use caution on purchasing used batteries. Lithium Ion (Li-ion) have a finite number of charge cycles before they are spent. If you use the battery a lot, and let it go down below 50%, only expect to get a year out of it. Leave it plugged in whenever you can and it will last much longer. Li-ion batteries lose about 18% of their capacity after 120 full charge cycles.
Many dell batteries have LED indicators on then, with a membrane button to display how much of a charge they have (must be removed from the system to see the button). Try re-seating the battery if you haven't already.

(12,537 posts)Battery is less that a year old and this problem has been going on for about the last two months.
It's my daughters computer and she doesn't live in the same city that I do. I just brought it home to see if, maybe, I could find out the problem. Oh, well, we'll see how it goes. Thanks, Guys

(12,537 posts)just like if you had turned off a switch. Booting it up again and you hit the on/off button andt goes througouh the regular proceedure to boot up. windows does not say it was inproperly shut down. Battery always say fully charged or 99%

(25,592 posts)Your problem sounds like the laptop battery problems we had at work, before I retired. The laptops sat in the docking station most of the time. The battery was seldom actually used.
What would happen, the battery would be charged up when first put in the docking station, the system would check the battery once, after that the battery would self-discharge, because the system never checked it again.
That is hard on Lithium-ion batteries.
The solution was to remove the laptop from the docking station and run it on the battery a couple of time a month, then but it back. The system would then check the battery and recharge it.
