... and IE11 is in beta right now for Win7 and is about to be released through WindowsUpdate.

Microsoft ships tool to block IE11 on Windows 7

All that being said, IE10 is the last full release for Win7.

What I am unclear on is how someone has a Windows machine that doesn't already have IE on it - and how it hasn't automatically updated to latest version for their OS.

But they released it for Win7 about half a year after that.

If you have Win8, you probably don't keep track of what is going on with Win7. So I guess you can be forgiven...   this time.

Today was the first time I started IE, except for the time I downloaded Mozilla over a year ago.

You already have an IE version embedded in your OS. My advice is, don't make a bad situation worse by installing another piece-of-crap browser on top of an existing piece-of-crap browser. Go with what you've got, unless you absolutely can't function without upgrading.

If somebody still has IE6 installed, they should definitely upgrade. I can see not upgrading right when a new version comes out, but to not update software is a bad idea for security. There are too many vulnerabilities on older, unpatched browsers.

Yes IE isn't a great browser, but a newer, more secure version is better than an older, less secure version.

If it is less than version 9, upgrade to 9.
IE10 is nice but the new security features can cause compatibility issues at times. And it does not always play nice with Flickr.
