Ridiculous! This President is faced with a very serious threat that demands some sort of response. This is a humanitarian crisis and all the RW/Republicans want to do is play politics with it.

My response to them is that I am very thankful that Barack Obama is handling this matter rather than Romney.

If a Republican was in office and bombing the hell out of Syria right now they'd be cheering it on.

I protested against the Iraq war and I voted for Obama for peace. I trust his judgment.

The hypocrisy of the the right wing and their goal to destroy this President is unbelievable!

The only countries I know with really big stakes in this are Turkey and Jordan. They're taking the refugees in, so is Iraq.

Lebanon may be doing so as well. But Turkey is the one who has been calling for Assad to be gone for a long time. And they are in NATO, just like the US and France and a number of other nations.

I think the best solution is for the UN to get in there. If the Russians don't trust the USA or other nations to treat their friend Assad well, they could send in their people along with other nationals.

The goal is to stop the killing. Calling the UN is the simplest solution. IMO.

than Syria, which was horrific in itself.

It's Russia arming the ME with chemical weapons and helping Iran with its nuclear program that's the issue here. Not only that but Russia is also very influential in Yemen and Somalia, two countries who just happen to have successful Al Qaeda groups. There's a reason for that. Russia can and does use AQ to its advantage when it wants to, as long as it's targeting the West.

11. AQ is a fragmented thing. Very loosely connected, if at all

since OBL's death. The last alert was evidence of OBL's successor in Pakistan attempting to assert control over AQAP in Yemen. Some don't think he can do it since AQAP has been the most active and most deadly group of all. And the best organized.

Who knows which group attacked Russia and if they're still in existence even. There are other Islamist groups in the Stans that have had specific issues with Russia for centuries.

That gives Putin the option of supplying AQ in other regions which don't directly threaten Russia. Like Yemen and Somalia. Russia is also good at flooding an area with arms that just happen to wind up in the hands of terrorists. And it is notorious for not accounting for arms traded. The more business it does in a region the more likely it is to be able to sneak shipments through.

As usual President Obama is looking at the whole picture and the future and yes dimensional chess does come into it.

It does suck. Putin is really bad news. I think we all would rather have the President focused on domestic/social issues (which he is excellent on) than the middle east but it comes with the job. I feel much better knowing Obama rather than a Bush, Romney or Palin type is making these hard decisions.

But he waited for evidence. People willing to invade a country because it might have chemical and nuclear weapons should be all for invading one where it is not only confirmed they have them, but they've actually used them.

During the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, it was common to read: Yes, this Middle Eastern ruler is a vile dictator, he's used poison gas on his own people, he's engineered repression at home, he's hostile to Israel... but we can't be the world's policeman, and all these factors put together don't justify U.S. military intervention in a country that's no threat to us.

Some people who took that view during the Bush years are now willing to support U.S. military intervention under similar circumstances.

Let us not pretend that partisans on our side are always pure of heart. It's often true that, in politics, where you stand depends on where you sit.

I personally don't think that this situation demands a military response. I do agree with you, though, that with Bush, McCain, or Romney in the White House making the decision, many of these born-again peaceniks would be happy to support anything that "their" President wanted, up to and including an invasion by ground troops. I would rather have the decision made by Obama than by any of those clowns.
