"Sometimes glass is just glass and it just breaks"

A Manitoba family's morning started with a bang today, after their glass-top table suddenly shattered in their dining room.

Chantal Ruchkall says she and her husband woke up to a loud gunshot-like sound on Friday.

"I ran to the kitchen and … our table was completely, I don't know, exploded or disassembled," she told CBC News.

"I right away looked around for kids because I thought, 'Oh my gosh, did one of the kids do something,' you know? But there was nobody around, everything was closed up in the house … this had just exploded."

If you do glass fusing you have to be careful to have glass that expands and contracts at the same rate, it's know as a coefficient rating. if the glass table was made with different glass lots at the end of a batch or somewhere without any Quality control...... (very likely), it can happen with moderate temperature fluctuations or a quick temperature change

After we set a hot dish on it over evening. It was fine throughout dinner but later in the evening it went just like that.

In the middle of the night. It was startling - freaked both us and the cats. We knew the cats weren't responsible since the case was completely enclosed.

The shelf was probably as old as the case - from about 1910 - and had a lot of scratches. We figure that that made the shelf vulnerable to breakage especially with weight on it.
