Entire house illegally dumped in New Zealand

Last edited Wed Nov 29, 2017, 02:16 PM - Edit history (1)

The graffiti-strewn and derelict bungalow appeared over a week ago on an area that had recently been cleared for a new retail centre in Takanini, to the south of New Zealand's largest city, the Newshub website reports.

But unlike Dorothy's house in the Wizard of Oz, the hovel probably arrived on the back of a truck, rather than being lifted by a tornado.

Rod Bray of developers Northbridge Properties told Newshub that the culprits were probably trying to cut their own demolition costs by fly-tipping the house.

"The options are either pay to have it demolished, or you dump it somewhere else and make it someone else's problem," he said, pointing out that it would cost his company over NZ$20,000 ($13,800; £10,300) to remove it.

Can you think of anything apart from "illegally dumped'? I might change the title to make it clearer.

I've never seen a whole house, but people from the city drive out here and dump their abandoned furniture and appliances, carpets and discarded junk, businesses drop off their construction trash, yard waste and tree trimmings, old tires, spoiled food, oil, even hazardous waste.

Now the Stuff.nz website reports that a company has come forward to say that they had been storing the house for a year - which had originally stood on the plot in the suburb of Takanini - and were merely 'returning it to sender', unaware that the land's ownership had changed hands.

Rod Bray of current landowners Northbridge Properties said there appeared to be a dispute over payments between the owners of the graffiti-strewn bungalow and the contractor who had been storing it.

This led to the company dumping the house back where it came from, New Zealand Herald reports Mr Bray as saying.

He added that while he is "sympathetic" to the house removal contractor, Northbridge Properties would still pursue prosecutions against those involved.
