Bacon Festival Runs Out Of Bacon

DAYTON, Ohio (WTVN) -- The organizers of Bacon Fest in Dayton are apologizing after twice as many people than expected showed up, leading to long lines and food shortages.

It's no secret that bacon lovers are passionate and they took their frustrations about the festival to the event's Facebook page. However, the event's organizer, Shannon Morgan, says she heard more positive than negative feedback.

"We will learn from our mistakes and every year get a little bit better with it," said Morgan, who is president of the Miami Valley Restaurant Association.

Glad I wasn't there. I would have been very disappointed to find that they had no more bacon for "bacon-related... drinks". Bummer.

At least that is what I recall hearing for them raising the prices on bacon.

Britain's National Pig Association, "the voice of the British pig industry," warned recently that a global shortage of bacon and pork "is now unavoidable" because of shrinking herds.

I'd do it myself but I don't have thumbs....

It's for a snack called Beggin' Strips. The dog can't have bacon, or meat, because of liver disease, but it doesn't stop her from scaring the living shit out of everyone within a hundred feet when that commercial comes on....she leaps up, barking at full and frantic volume and doesn't stop until the commercial does.

It's the oddest thing!

Really. No joke!

A little old lady died of cancer. She had a ten year old dog that was her constant companion. The dog had liver disease so she had to eat a vegetarian diet and take a milk thistle/Sam-E combo pill to help detox her liver every day. Her family had dogs, busy lives and didn't want to deal w/the medical issues, so they were gonna put the dog down.

A friend of a friend of mine heard about it, and started calling around looking for someone to take the old girl. They landed on me. My old dog that I fished out of a dumpster in Europe a long time ago had been dead for a couple of years, we were down to a one dog household, and the place needed a pick-me-up, so I went and got the death row doggie. Except for the damn pill and the oddball food she has to eat, she's a very peppy and youthful ten year old. Runs around like a puppy.

She's the one that goes nuts for the BACON!!!!!!!!! commercial, not for the treats (she can't have them--her idea of a good time is a dried piece of sweet potato) but, I think, for the golden retriever that stars in it...!

It was good of you to take her in. She sounds like a sweetheart. I had a cat with kidney problems who died quite young. It was a congenital defect.

The meat is too hard on her liver. Science Diet makes a liver disease vegetarian food, but it smells like shit. She'll eat it but it isn't her favorite. I feed her a food called Natural Balance vegetarian (made by the actor Dick Van Patten, oddly enough) that smells good enough for a human to eat. She scarfs it down. She likes a bit of rice, pumpkin, sweet potato, a little soy at times, and she does OK. I give her vegetarian and vegan treats, too made w/apples, blueberries, squash, etc. If she sees you with a baby carrot she starts drooling--she is a sucker for carrots and she's conned the other dog, plus the dogs of my other relatives, into believing those are highly desirable treats.

I slip the other dog a little meat on the side now and then, but she's pretty much eating the same food most days, too -- it's easier and she was getting fat, so the diet has helped her lose some weight and take the strain off her joints (two operations--hip and knee, so she needed to slim down).

So far, so good. Miss Liver Disease has settled into our pack quite nicely, and she's a lot of fun and good company for our other pooch--it's all good. I will admit, I was kind of shocked that they gave the dog away--if it were my mother's beloved pet (and the dog was beloved) I'd want to keep it around as a tangible reminder. She's a little feisty, but aside from the pill and the food (I have the cans delivered-- so no real biggie) she's no trouble, she's a great watchdog (worth twenty times her weight in gold, she's so alert) and she has a good personality. Their loss was my gain, I'm glad I ended up with her. I hope she has a good long life with us!
