http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=1750981I suppose "met with the Pope" is one way to describe it, but using that phrase is not truly accurate ... especially when one considers what "met with" is commonly understood in politics or business. They're puffing up the "accidental" corridor encounter to make it appear as though it was something more than it truly was.
In my opinion this is simply more theater and deception and mischaracterization that I've now come to expect from the Sanders campaign.
I guess Bernie's "Pope-Spotter" walkie-talkie team did their job very well! :-D ("Hey, spotted him! He's in the foyer! Over. You guys need to get down her right NOW before he's gone. Over. Looks like he's headed to the loo. Hurry! Over."
This type of staged and corralled "bumped-into-the-Pontiff" while he was on the way out the door, is HARDLY the same as the formal sit-down "meeting-with-the-pope" that Bernie originally wanted everyone to believe.
Considering all the other exaggerations and half-truths leading up to this moment, I must assume that by "five minutes" it was, in reality, closer to three minutes, but Sachs just rounded UP to the nearest five.
But still, I'm sure it was a very thrilling moment for Bernie. (What the Pope actually thinks about the whole thing remains to be seen I guess.)

(42,862 posts)It's a fairly lame and generic alert. The alerter didn't even bother to cite any violations of the TOS, just that he/she didn't appreciate the post, and for this particular jury, that was enough.
Juror #6 cracks me up!
Kudos to Juror #1 and Juror #4

JURY RESULTS
A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Sat Apr 16, 2016, 09:41 AM, and voted 4-3 to HIDE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It's this person's opinion, and it may be a bit grating, but then point that out in rebuttal.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: This weird Pope obsession needs to stop.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Not hide worthy.
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Over the top, especially the disrespectful gif. Ordinarily I don't vote to hide anti posts, but this one is just so full of crap that it does go over the top. These kind of posts reflect more on the poster than the targetted candidate.
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given

(42,862 posts)... for those jurors who go along with things that are obviously not alert-worthy.
I brought these jury results to his attention, and if he's true to his word, he'll review it. It's unlikely that any of us will know what actions he takes ... he even said that DU members who had their jury privilege revoked wouldn't be told about it. (He was probably anticipating the possibility that they'd view the revocation as a badge of honor and point of pride, thus encouraging others to do the same, I presume.)
It's all so silly and it really accomplishes nothing toward improving their candidate's chances at winning the nomination.
On the bright side, this will all be over very soon, and Bernie will fade away ... headed back to Vermont and the Senate where he belongs. He'll get much more accomplished there than he ever would as President.
Go, Hillary! We love you!

(38,437 posts)Rather than ignore their comments, I held up my Transparency page as the perfect example of why they are so petty and why Skinner changed the rules:

(A consequence of having 7 active hides is getting a -140 added to my score for jury selection potential. So... my chances of being selected are a flat 0% ).

JURY RESULTS
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Apr 18, 2016, 09:56 AM, and the Jury voted 4-3 to HIDE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: The threat to the jury ("REMEMBER: Skinner is watching..." is definitely out of line. Changed my mind. Otherwise, I would have let the post stand.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: The "note to jury" is a threat to other DUers. Get rid of the post.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Oh Puhleeeze! This alert is disruptive, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, and inappropriate. SMH
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Yep, you won me over Alerter. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the post, and my initial impression was to leave it. But you're right. That warning/threat is over the top.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.
I was #6. Edited to correct!! Sorry Jackie, I was #6 NOT #7!!!

(42,862 posts)... what else have they got. It's obvious to me that their candidate won't be the nominee for our party, so this is the ONLY thing they have at their disposal that makes them feel as though they are in control of a situation that's COMPLETELY OUT OF THEIR CONTROL.
Bernie will LOSE and there's NOTHING that they can do about it.
Even the delightfully fun passtime of alert-stalking won't change it.
This will be over very soon.

NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)Not that it will do any good ... and it definitely won't reverse it ... but it does at least bring it to someone's attention for review of how alerts are abused (and who does it, and who votes for it).

Another thread had an anonymous source saying the meeting was always planned -- at 6 a.m., out in the hall, before leaving for Greece.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)... and it's easy for me to imagine that the Pontiff was pestered and pursued relentlessly by Bernie's "people" trying to arrange an actual sit-down, photo-op, formal meeting ... but when that failed, the Pontiff's secretary said "I can't promise anything, but maybe you can catch him outside the breakfast room around 6AM ... that's the best we can do ... but a formal meeting is out of the question."
Stay tuned ... there's more to come. It's just not here yet. But it's coming, and it will probably be as juicy as the earlier revelations about all the "hidden" things that are going on in the background. I can't wait!!

Like you, I don't care that he went to Rome and bumped into the Pontiff.

(10,014 posts)You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sat Apr 16, 2016, 09:53 AM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: The Usual Suspects
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Alerter is exactly correct.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Leave it alone - the original post should not have been hidden
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This was posted in the Hillary Group. Is this poster being stalked?
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It was properly hidden in GD-P. But the protected groups have more leeway. No direct insult to any specific DUer. Bitterness and sour-grapes are allowed in these forums, IMHO.
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: If it was hidden once, it should be hidden again. This poster apparently doesn't like jury decisions, and will do whatever they want to do.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: There is no context for the post. So how does one judge it?

And, that's exactly how it went down. Bet on it.
Saint Bernardo kept hanging out in the hotel foyer until Francis HAD to leave for Greece and then ambushed him there.
I'd imagine some aids are catching "HOLY hell" for the slip up.
No pics? So, Sachs can't even prove it happened.
How much do you wanna bet that Bernardo and Francisco did no more than "Hi" sign each other from across the lobby?

(41,980 posts)As luck would have it for Sanders, panelists who speak at Vatican-sponsored events are given the rare opportunity to stay at the Santa Marta guesthouse inside the walls of Vatican City. Most decline. Who would want to stay in such Spartan digs in what is essentially a hostel for clerics when the glory of Rome calls? But for Sanders, the sacrifice of a midnight stroll through Romes cobbled streets or a toss of a coin into the Trevi Fountain paid off before 4:00 a.m. this morning, when the Santa Martas other VIP guest, Pope Francis, was in the foyer of the hotel getting ready to leave for Lesbos, Greece. Thats where the two met for around five minutes, Sanders told the Associated Press. No photographer was present.
It would be unfair to call what the senator did doorstepping. Francis would have had to approve the encounter, and his security detail would have made sure Sanders wasnt just milling about the foyer when the pope was heading out if the pope wasnt inclined to meet him. Although the Vaticans official channels had nixed the possibility of a private audience, they always conceded that with this pope you never know for sure. Francis had sent a personal note to participants in the conference on Friday, apologizing for not being able to swing by to see them, though he did meet Bolivian President Juan Evo Morales Ayma during a private audience.
By Friday night, the senator hadnt given up hope. In an early-morning interview with the AP Sanders said, We had an opportunity to meet with him this morning. It was a real honor for me, for my wife and I to spend some time with him. I think he is one of the extraordinary figures not only in the world today but in modern world history.
