Bernie Sanders has confirmed to ABC News that he met with Pope Francis early Saturday morning at the Vatican.

I suppose "met with the Pope" is one way to describe it, but using that phrase is not truly accurate ... especially when one considers what "met with" is commonly understood in politics or business. They're puffing up the "accidental" corridor encounter to make it appear as though it was something more than it truly was.

In my opinion this is simply more theater and deception and mischaracterization that I've now come to expect from the Sanders campaign.

He said the couple met Pope Francis in the foyer of the hotel as he was leaving for Greece. The meeting lasted about five minutes, Sachs said.

I guess Bernie's "Pope-Spotter" walkie-talkie team did their job very well! :-D ("Hey, spotted him! He's in the foyer! Over. You guys need to get down her right NOW before he's gone. Over. Looks like he's headed to the loo. Hurry! Over.&quot

This type of staged and corralled "bumped-into-the-Pontiff" while he was on the way out the door, is HARDLY the same as the formal sit-down "meeting-with-the-pope" that Bernie originally wanted everyone to believe.

Considering all the other exaggerations and half-truths leading up to this moment, I must assume that by "five minutes" it was, in reality, closer to three minutes, but Sachs just rounded UP to the nearest five.

But still, I'm sure it was a very thrilling moment for Bernie. (What the Pope actually thinks about the whole thing remains to be seen I guess.)

It's a fairly lame and generic alert. The alerter didn't even bother to cite any violations of the TOS, just that he/she didn't appreciate the post, and for this particular jury, that was enough.

Juror #6 cracks me up!

Kudos to Juror #1 and Juror #4

... for those jurors who go along with things that are obviously not alert-worthy.

I brought these jury results to his attention, and if he's true to his word, he'll review it. It's unlikely that any of us will know what actions he takes ... he even said that DU members who had their jury privilege revoked wouldn't be told about it. (He was probably anticipating the possibility that they'd view the revocation as a badge of honor and point of pride, thus encouraging others to do the same, I presume.)

It's all so silly and it really accomplishes nothing toward improving their candidate's chances at winning the nomination.

On the bright side, this will all be over very soon, and Bernie will fade away ... headed back to Vermont and the Senate where he belongs. He'll get much more accomplished there than he ever would as President.

Go, Hillary! We love you!

Note to Jury: The above statements represent my opinion. No DU rules or terms of service have been violated. It is not against the rules to have an opinion that differs from the Alerter.

Bernie will LOSE and there's NOTHING that they can do about it.

Even the delightfully fun passtime of alert-stalking won't change it.

This will be over very soon.

... it's still early now, but STAND BY ... there's more to come that will give us a more realistic view of what actually happened and what probably happened in the hours and moments leading up to the chance encounter (in a foyer, not a reception room).

SBOS, Greece — Bernie Sanders can officially thumb his nose at all the naysayers who criticized the political wisdom of a Democratic presidential candidate taking 36 hours off the campaign trail to travel to Rome just days before a major primary. He had come on a wing and a prayer, as it were, to speak briefly at a Vatican conference, but there was nothing on the pope’s schedule suggesting the two men would meet. Then, in the early hours of Saturday morning, the gamble paid off: Sanders got five minutes of facetime with Pope Francis.

As luck would have it for Sanders, panelists who speak at Vatican-sponsored events are given the rare opportunity to stay at the Santa Marta guesthouse inside the walls of Vatican City. Most decline. Who would want to stay in such Spartan digs in what is essentially a hostel for clerics when the glory of Rome calls? But for Sanders, the sacrifice of a midnight stroll through Rome’s cobbled streets or a toss of a coin into the Trevi Fountain paid off before 4:00 a.m. this morning, when the Santa Marta’s other VIP guest, Pope Francis, was in the foyer of the hotel getting ready to leave for Lesbos, Greece. That’s where the two met for around five minutes, Sanders told the Associated Press. No photographer was present.

It would be unfair to call what the senator did “doorstepping.” Francis would have had to approve the encounter, and his security detail would have made sure Sanders wasn’t just milling about the foyer when the pope was heading out if the pope wasn’t inclined to meet him. Although the Vatican’s official channels had nixed the possibility of a private audience, they always conceded that with this pope “you never know for sure.” Francis had sent a personal note to participants in the conference on Friday, apologizing for not being able to swing by to see them, though he did meet Bolivian President Juan Evo Morales Ayma during a private audience.

By Friday night, the senator hadn’t given up hope. In an early-morning interview with the AP Sanders said, “We had an opportunity to meet with him this morning. It was a real honor for me, for my wife and I to spend some time with him. I think he is one of the extraordinary figures not only in the world today but in modern world history.”

... put on a "time out" or "suspension". They can't help themselves. They think it actually helps their candidate out in the real world. (It doesn't.)

I have read from several people here on DU, as well as from a religious friend that the Catholic church services this week were filled with jokes about the agnostic Jew chasing the Pope around the Vatican.
