It was nothing more than a casual greeting and a handshake, but he can now say he DID meet the pope, although he seems to be exaggerating the whole thing to make more than what it really was.

of truth ... not.

"Truthiness" perhaps. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truthiness

Colbert chose the word truthiness just moments before taping the premiere episode of The Colbert Report on October 17, 2005, after deciding that the originally scripted word – "truth" – was not absolutely ridiculous enough. "We're not talking about truth, we're talking about something that seems like truth – the truth we want to exist", he explained.

The Pope's own words "he knew I was coming" are fairly believable, I'd say.

http://ncronline.org/news/francis-meeting-bernie-sanders-not-political-just-quick-greeting

a) Sanders was staying at the same Vatican guest house (probably along with the other participants) as the pope. So it was a matter of waiting in the lobby of the guest house at the right time; essentially a 6 am ambush (though one to which the pope was surely alerted ahead of time).
b) Sachs (a Sanders advisor whom I've now lost complete respect for) was obviously heavily involved in arranging both the conference invitation and the "rendezvous". Note that Sachs not only attended the rendezvous, but discussed the rendezvous, by speakerphone, with the reporters traveling with the Pope to Greece!

Shameless political exploitation of this event: tacky, tacky, tacky. And also the actions of a political wannabe, not the political maturity of a future president.
These are not the actions of someone who understands the nuances and consequences of global diplomacy, either.

http://ncronline.org/blogs/ncr-today/francis-meets-bernie-sanders-briefly-discuss-climate-change

Sanders had arrived at the Vatican Friday for a brief visit away from the campaign trail to address a conference on building a more moral economy. The question of whether the candidate would meet the pope had hovered over the trip, with some criticizing the Vermont senator for politicizing Francis.

Jeffrey Sachs, an American who had helped organize the Vatican conference, told reporters traveling with the pope on speakerphone from Greece that Sanders used the meeting to thank Francis for his environmental message and his recent encyclical Laudato Si'.

Sachs, the director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, said those present for the meeting also included Sanders' and Sachs' wives and Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the chancellor of the Vatican's Pontifical Academy of the Sciences.

Sanders had spent Friday night at the Santa Marta guesthouse. Sachs said the candidate met Francis at about 6:00 am in Rome, just before the pope headed to the airport for a one-day visit to Lesbos.

Note that the president of the Pontifical Academy (fyi, of social sciences, not "the Sciences&quot , Margaret Archer, who offered blunt criticism of the inclusion of Bernie on the program, was not there for that early-morning encounter.

This 24-hour fossil-fuel-wasting political exploitation adventure is so objectionable on so many levels .

Sachs is a smart and well-respected visionary on poverty issues. Too bad he didn't see how silly this entire Bernie Goes to Rome episode would become. Sanders surrogates are a real problem for him.
