but merely a polite greeting/handshake. As a recovering Catholic, an endorsement would be that much more likely to make me run the other way!!

I do like Pope Francis but I think he got caught on this one. One of his staff made an error and he tried to fix it without endorsing Bernie.

As a recovering Catholic like you, it would make me run if the Church endorsed a candidate.

but I AM a Catholic. From my perspective, the whole thing was a farce, and an insult to Pope Francis. Particularly with the spotlight stealing from his MISSION. That infuriates me.

which was to make an important humanitarian statement. The Bernie stunt was a huge distraction.

I have my own issues with CC doctrine and dictates, but have great admiration and respect for the priests and nuns I know personally who are wonderful people. I have been much more impressed by Pope Francis than by any Pope since John XXIII. But he still represents a hidebound institution that has historically interfered with the State and thus should be kept VERY much apart from it.

Putting Pope Francis in a position that would even give the appearance of an endorsement was a farce and a political stunt at best. It also shows extremely poor political judgment. I can't forgive Bernie or his advisors for that.

Not a Catholic, and I like Bernie, but am completely behind Hillary. I agree that it was shameful to take the spotlight away from Pope Francis' mission and try to take it for himself in a political stunt. Very bad move.

http://www.dailynewsbin.com/opinion/pope-francis-wanted-todays-news-cycle-to-be-about-syrian-refugees-not-bernie-sanders/24504/

<snip>

Pope Francis visited the island of Lesbos this weekend and made a point of bringing twelve Syrian refugees home with him – six of them children – as a way of setting a public example for the world. If the tiny and pristine Vatican can permanently take in and care for a dozen refugees, the world’s larger nations should take in a whole lot more. The media-savvy Pope clearly orchestrated his trip in the hope of making it the day’s lead news story worldwide. The more media exposure he could drum up for his trip, the more pressure citizens around the world might put on their own governments to take in Syrian refugees, and the more lives saved.

Instead, the only headlines the Pope garnered today were about his non-meeting handshake with Bernie Sanders. It’s explains why the normally genial Francis had the look of someone who wanted to spit nails while he was providing the real details of the situation to reporters. He exasperatedly explained that shaking the hand of Sanders was nothing more than “good manners” and that anyone who tried to take it as a political move is in need of a “psychiatrist.”

When have we ever heard any Pope, let alone this one, talking in such blunt terms when discussing a member of an allied foreign government? It points to just how pissed Pope Francis was that not only did Sanders dishonestly drag him into a presidential election, Sanders also purposely sabotaged a news narrative that had been aimed at highlighting the plight of Syrian refugees. Instead that story got muted today, and fewer governments may end up being pressured to take in refugees. It’s possible Sanders just cost some refugees their lives.

And at Mass on Sunday, our priest made a thinly veiled reference to the Pope being busy last week and the congregation giggled a bit.

It's playing as a farcical moment in politics...
