Why Hillary Clinton gave clean cookstoves to millions of women around the world

An initiative she helped found as secretary of state promoted this simple solution to a big health problem.

While visiting a hospital in Camden, New Jersey, Hillary Clinton stopped to chat with a group of nurses—and got an unexpected compliment.

The nurse thanked Hillary for working as secretary of state to eliminate one of the biggest killers in world—respiratory illness, which disproportionately impacts women and girls.

As secretary of state, Hillary helped launch an alliance that worked to solve this problem by doing something that might seem incredibly small: creating and distributing cookstoves.

For nearly three billion people in the developing world, traditional cookstoves and open fires are the primary means of cooking and heating. Traditional cookstoves are typically fueled by wood, manure, other biological material, or some combination of the three.

The smoke from these fuels is often toxic—and, because they’re often used in closed environments, these stoves and open fires pollute the air that women and children breathe.

Many of the respiratory illnesses that are killing millions of people are caused by inhaling the smoke from these traditional cookstoves and open fires.

In September of 2010, Hillary announced the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, an international effort to get cookstoves that would burn clean fuel—significantly reducing the health risks to women and girls in the developing world—into as many communities as possible. These cookstoves would also cut down on pollutants, contributing to a cleaner environment. ..................more.........

4. Something so small but has an exponential effect!

Reminds me of the story where as SoS HRC made possible for Trans People to get Federal ID's with their preferred gender, which then allowed them to get the same in their own States which made a huge difference for them and their lives/opportunities!
