..." For the kickoff of the 40th annual Chittenden County United Way fund-raising drive in Burlington, Vt., the sponsors considered themselves fortunate to have as guests Mayor Bernard Sanders of Burlington and Gov. Richard Snelling of Vermont.
But the charity workers heard the sort of things they wanted to hear from only one of their guests.
''I don't believe in charities,'' said Mayor Sanders, bringing a shocked silence to a packed hotel banquet room. The Mayor, who is a Socialist, went on to question the ''fundamental concepts on which charities are based'' and contended that government, rather than charity organizations, should take over responsibility for social programs. No wonder Bernie not only didn't get an award, an audience, or even his coveted grip-and-grin photo op, but had to ambush Pope Francis outside the breakfast room at 6 a.m. to even get a glimpse and a quick handshake. Heck, even Kim Davis got a couple of souvenir rosaries.

(521 posts)7. When his Vatican visit turned out to be a bust
I was reminded of this lyric from the musical Evita, when she went on her 'Rainbow Tour' of Europe, especially in Italy:
More bad news from Rome, she met with the Pope
She only got a rosary, a kindly word
I wouldn't say the Holy Father gave her the bird
But papal decorations, never a hope
She still looked the part in St. Peter's, caught the eye
She only got a rosary, a kindly word
I wouldn't say the Holy Father gave her the bird
But papal decorations, never a hope
She still looked the part in St. Peter's, caught the eye
The real Eva Peron was hoping that Pope Pious XII would honor her with a papal title. That way, she would return home triumphantly and rub it in the faces of the society ladies, who shunned her and looked down at her working class roots. But the former model/actress with only a sixth grade education got a cool reception from the Vatican. Her visit lasted only 20 minutes, and she left without a title, just a rosary he gave her.
On a similar vein, Sanders was hoping to benefit greatly from his 'visit with the Pope,' but it backfired. He more or less got the brush-off and no photo-op.
