Clinton nabs major environmental endorsement

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/05/nrdc-action-fund-endorses-hillary-clinton-223720

A week before voters in California and five other states head to the polls, Hillary Clinton on Tuesday earned the endorsement of the NRDC Action Fund, marking the first time the political arm of the National Resources Defense Council has backed a presidential candidate.

In a statement from the NRDC Action Fund, the group's president Rhea Suh laid out the stakes in the looming presidential election, one that she wrote will be between Clinton and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. The endorsement makes no direct mention of Bernie Sanders, who is counting on a strong performance in all six states, particularly in California, as a boost of momentum heading into the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

"Only one of those candidates wants to build a future powered by a clean energy economy. Only one of those candidates will make America a leader in the global fight against climate change. And only one of those candidates will work to ensure that every child and every family in America has clean water to drink, clean air to breathe, and a safe and healthy place to live," Suh wrote. "That candidate is Hillary Clinton, and that’s why — for the first time — the NRDC Action Fund is stepping up now to endorse Secretary Clinton for President of the United States."

The group ripped into Trump for what it said he would do to the environment.

"If he wins, Donald Trump’s plan for his first 100 days would take us back 100 years. His nomination by the Republican Party puts one of the most anti-environment presidential candidates in history a step closer to the Oval Office," Suh wrote. "He proved that recently during a disastrous speech outlining his energy and environmental policies, when he promised he would renege on the Paris Climate Agreement, abandon pollution limits on coal-burning power plants and ease up on polluters who threaten America’s rivers and lakes. He’d continue subsidies for dirty fossil fuels and open up for more drilling vast tracts of unspoiled lands and oceans."

During a campaign rally last week in California, Trump lamented the state's drought, which he suggested was a result of state officials prioritizing a "three-inch fish" over its people.

"We're going to solve your water problem," the businessman said. "You have a water problem that is so insane. It is so ridiculous where they're taking the water and shoving it out to sea."
