President Obama On The Verge Of Issuing A Citizens United Stunner
The President is in the midst of very serious plan to issue an executive order that requires companies doing business with the federal government to disclose their political contributions. Just think; with a stroke of his pen the President will make dark money donors receiving billions of taxpayer money reveal who they contribute to or lose out on those highly-profitable federal government contracts.
Now, of course this does not, in any way, shape or form overturn Citizens United. But it is a major step in prompting some companies and corporations doing business with the federal government to rein in some of their dark money efforts to buy influence over the government. The directive, a so-called dark money executive order would mandate that all government contractors publicly report their contributions to groups that spend money to influence campaigns and elections.
SNIP
President Obamas order would apply to roughly 70 percent of the Fortune 100 companies including Exxon Mobil, Apple, General Electric and General Motors to name but a fraction of the whole. The order will apply to any company with contracts exceeding $100,000 annually that probably will affect the preponderance of companies profiting from federal government contracts.
While we will continue to examine additional steps we can take to reduce the corrosive influence of money in politics, only Congress can put an end to it.

(9,148 posts)And mid-term election is as critical to show up & VOTE.
Because without the Senate & House in our favor, no President will be able to make anything happen.
Obama is an exceptional man. He's also a Constitutional Lawyer..he knows his power.
Sure am proud of our Dem Candidate Clinton, who has campaigned & raised funds to get her fellow Dems in office with her.
This is a battle & coattails matter in the end.

(9,148 posts)Oooh it's going to piss off the Pukes.
So does Paul Singer's RW PAC have to disclose the money spent on their pro-Bernie TV AD against HRC?
Or if any $$$ has been shoveled into that "Charitable Offshore Fund".
Guess he'd need to be a Fed Contractor for that to happen.
Time to elect HRC & put an end to the Koch influence.
Hillary can then Nominate Barack Obama for Supreme Court.

(9,148 posts)Pres Obama can only operate from the Federal level.
Federal Contractors cannot influence politics, to garner themselves more Fed Contracts. Thats the gist of this executive order

(16,189 posts)He could possibly require that companies doing business with the federal government get their accounting firms to verify / sign off on the statements.
This is a wonderful idea, although it won't address the mandatory "bundling" that goes on in executive suites. It would be tougher to require companies to disclose the political contributions of executives as individuals to the PACs.

(3,212 posts)As MUCH as I hate the CU ruling, I'm wary of executive orders.
However, this move by President Obama is just brilliant! If it involves government contracts, surely he has every right and reason to do this!
