Clinton Owes Her Commanding Lead to African-American Women - HRC Room

Jonathan Allen

There’s been a lot of talk about an enthusiasm gap between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton in this election cycle: Every Democrat wants to vote for him and some reluctantly vote for her.

At least, that’s how the narrative goes. And it’s easy to believe if you’re a millennial—because it’s pretty true among your cohort—or, like many journalists, you spend a lot of time with elite white dudes.

But there’s another subset of the electorate that has been the story of the Democratic primary campaign: African-American women. More than any other demographic group, black women are the reason Hillary Clinton has racked up a 2 million-vote lead on Bernie Sanders and, more important, a 300-point advantage among pledged delegates to the Democratic National Convention.

Thank you!

"The bedrock of her winning campaign is African-American women, and, as a group, these women seem pretty damn determined to vote for her.

“They are the absolute heart of the party,” Jaime Harrison, the South Carolina Democratic Party chairman said of African-American women in a comment posted on Sidewire (the political communication platform I work for). “Hillary is their BFF.” -

So much enthusiasm for Hillary!

Black women are the heart of the Party.

"We’re hearing a lot these days about the angry white base of the Republican Party.....

There are occasions when people also refer to the base of the Democratic Party. Often it is assumed that this group is made up of the most liberal activists - in this election cycle, Bernie Sanders supporters.

But take a moment to look at some of the data in a report about a group that doesn’t get much attention in our political discussions these days: The Status of Black Women in American Politics.

First of all, the number of black women who turn out to vote is higher than any other demographic group - 70% in 2012.... And no group votes more consistently Democratic than black women....
:

1992 Bill Clinton - 87%
1996 Bill Clinton - 89%
2000 Al Gore - 94%
2004 John Kerry - 90%
2008 Barack Obama - 96%
2012 Barack Obama - 96%

Black women have sized up who is the best qualified candidate to do what needs to be done. Then they take the step of voting to make it happen (and many do more).

They are legitimately one of the most -- if not the most -- marginalized demographic in us society. Underappreciated, underpaid, disrespected, victimized.

It is terrific -- and interesting -- Hillary resonates with them.

Cheers to them!

They're the most loyal voting block in the Democratic party by percentages and have been for awhile.

She and The Mothers have been making the case very strongly. I admire them all greatly.

She is also picking up more and more women overall lately.

I'm a bit over men running things, and fortunately, the best person for the job this year happens to be a woman!

African-American women can, more than any other group, be proud that they are bringing progressive ideas into reality. White women too often have a majority voting Republican, and a majority of white men always vote conservative, but not African American women. Black men aren't slacking in their work to make sure the Dems win either. African Americans should be proud, and we white folks should be grateful to them. I know I am.
