cross posted from GD: P: http://www.democraticunderground.com/12511627067for those who don't know who Nydia Velazquez is: http://velazquez.house.gov/about/bio.shtml
Here's what she had to say today:
We all know that the stakes are high in this election. And on no issue is that more clear than on the issue of gun violence prevention.
According to a report issued in 2012 by the New York Police Department, 97% of gun violence victims in New York City are African-American or Latino. 71% are African-American and 25 are Latino.
But, we don't need statistics to tell us that this is a critical issue for the communities I represent.
And we don't need statistics to tell us that we need a President who will stand up to the gun lobby and fight every day to keep us safe.
When we look at the records of the two candidates in this primary it is clear that Hillary Clinton is the only one on our side.
Hillary has spent decades advocating for common sense approaches to reduce gun violence.
I know that because I have been part of this important fight to prevent gun violence.
And I know who my allies have been. Just last fall I introduced legislation aimed at bolstering anti-violence and mental health programs and addressing the issue of lost and stolen firearms.
As Senator from New York, Hillary co-sponsored and voted for legislation to close the gun show loophole.
And she voted against providing gun dealers and manufacturers with dangerous liability protections that prevent victims of gun violence from holding irresponsible manufacturers and dealers accountable.
We are here today to talk about the law called PLACA, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, because Senator Sanders voted twice in support of PLACA.
He voted twice to protect gun dealers and sellers from being held accountable when their irresponsible actions led to heinous crimes.
There is reason why the NRA stated in 2005 that PLACA was the greatest legislative victory in 20 years when it was signed into law.
It granted sweeping legal immunities for gun dealers and manufacturers. The kind of immunity that nearly no other industry has.
And President Barack Obama, when he was the Senator, and Hillary Clinton, when she was the Senator, both of them vote against it.
Bernie Sanders voted for it. And to me that is a defining political issue in terms of my support for Hillary Clinton.
Thank you.
