U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders accepted money from foreign donors via his principal campaign committee, Bernie 2016.
Under campaign election laws, political committees may not accept money from unlawful residents or non-U.S. citizens. If such monies are received, the committee must comply with a strict set of directives by the FEC. These include a prohibition against using the money in a campaign and returning the money within a certain time frame.
During the first four months of his campaign, a total of 231 individuals were identified as Foreign Nationals (“aliens”) whose contributions contravened federal election laws.
Those named come directly from correspondence by the Treasurer of the committee, Susan Jackson, following reviews by the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
According to Jackson, all donations have been refunded. The amount of these refunds will be reported in the April 2016 FEC report submitted by Bernie 2016.
The vast number of these donors have English surnames, giving a clue to their country of citizenship. Major English-speaking countries include United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They may also be campaigning online for Bernie Sanders. A cross-reference of these identities with social media accounts would verify this hypothesis.
