Argentina Judge to be Extradited from Chile

Argentina Judge to be Extradited from Chile
Written by Kelsey Schmink on June 19, 2013.

The Chile Supreme Court has authorized the extradition of a former Argentine judge Otilio Romano for his involvement in human rights violations

Former judge Otilio Ireneo Roque Romano, who is from Argentina, fled to Chile from Argentina to avoid trial. He was involved in 103 cases of crimes against humanity in Mendoza during Argentina’s macabre military dictatorship, according to the Buenos Aires Herald.

This dictatorship in Argentina, similar to the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in Chile, tried to crush left-wing activism, including socialism, Marxism, and communism. Many peopl were captured against their will in broad daylight off the street, brutally tortured in secret military buildings for information, then murdered by being given sleeping injections then and dumped out of airplanes into the ocean.

Chile’s Judge Sergio Muñoz approved the extradition after considering the substantial evidence of Romano’s involvement in the forced disappearances of many innocent Argentine citizens.

Romano, who was also involved in torture, illegal raids, false imprisonment crimes, and denial of justice, says he had asked for political asylum but it was rejected by Chile and he was put under house arrest.
