Peru Polls: Humala's Approval Rating Falls to New Low

Pollster Ipsos-Peru said that Mr. Humala's popularity fell again in July, dropping to 33% from 41% in the previous month. Ipsos-Peru said the president had a 53% approval rating at the start of the year. The survey of 1,660 persons was taken from July 17 to July 19. It has a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.
In a separate survey, pollster GfK found that Mr. Humala's approval rating dipped to 32% in July from 39% the previous month and 55% at the start of the year. The GfK survey of 1,251 persons has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points. It was conducted from July 15 to July 17.

GfK Director Hernan Chaparro said that Mr. Humala's declining approval rating is also due to ongoing problems like crime and poor public services, as well as the outlook for the economy. Peru's economic activity has slowed in recent months as weak growth in China has hurt the country's exports. In the first five months of 2013, Peru's economy has expanded 5.4% compared to the same period last year.
