The Spanish government is due to sell a fleet of Mirage fighter jets to Argentina in a £10million deal that follows a recent diplomatic spat between Great Britain and Spain over the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar.
The move will fuel suspicions that there is a concerted effort to intimidate the United Kingdom, as Spain and Argentina make respective claims to Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. It has long been claimed that the Argentinians lack the military resources to try to take back the Falklands, but the new fighter deal may be aimed at levelling the playing field in the South Pacific.
President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has reportedly approved the new deal which will give Argentina the capability to attack the Falklands with laser-guided bombs. The 20 aircraft sold to the Argentine military are at Spains Albacete air base and will be shipped to Tandil air base south of Buenos Aires.
The British Ministry of Defence has stated that the Falklands have adequate air defences in the shape of just two RAF Eurofighter Typhoons.
