Journalist shot at in Guatemala

Journalist Fredy Rodas was shot at as he was going home on Guatemala's south coast and is recovering at a hospital in this capital, doctors said Tuesday.

The attack occurred Monday night in the city of Mazatenango.

Rodas, a journalist for Sonora Es La Noticia radio and a collaborator with several other media outlets, was hit by at least three bullets, one of which wounded his right eye, Jose Arriola said at Roosevelt Hospital.

The patient is in stable condition, Arriola said.

The motive of the attack is as yet unknown, though Rodas has said he received a threat on the telephone, but gave no further details.

Guatemalan journalist reported in critical condition after being shot 3 times in attack

GUATEMALA CITY — Authorities in Guatemala say assailants have shot and wounded a print and radio journalist in the southern part of the Central American nation.

Fire department spokesman Juan Lopez says Freddy Rodas was shot three times and is at a hospital in Guatemala City. Lopez says Rodas was attacked late Monday in the town of Mazatenango.

Rodas works for the newspaper Al Dia and for Radio Sonora.

Radio Sonora’s director Arnulfo Guzman says Rodas is in critical condition.

Last week, gunmen killed radio reporter Jesus Lim in Guatemala’s eastern province of Zacapa. Lima was shot as he sat inside his car parked outside the Sultana Radio station.

Police say they haven’t found out who is behind the attacks or why the journalists were targeted.
