Venezuela's Maduro pledges action on women's hair thieves
15 August 2013 Last updated at 00:12 ET
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has called on the police to act against gangs that are stealing women's hair.
The thieves sell the hair - sometimes stolen at gunpoint - to salons where it is used for extensions and wigs.
Attacks appear to be on the rise, especially in the country's second largest city Maracaibo, local media report.

However, the BBC's Irene Caselli in Venezuela says authorities are yet to receive any formal complaints.

(770 posts)I receive reports detailing crime statistics and operating modes in Venezuela. The general observation is that it suffers from a general breakdown of values...everybody steals if they can get away with it. Thus theft of copper wire, piping, fences, ligh bulbs and anything else they can reach is possible.
Hair theft is just another method they can use to get cash. But as any young person in poor areas knows, it's possible to be robbed for your shoes, belt and cell phone, and that's fairly common. One answer to this problem is to carry two wallets and two cell phones, one set to hand over to the thief. A few years ago I had to go to Congo, which is just as bad as Venezuela and I was warned to take plenty of things I could gradually replace as they were stolen. So I carried three cheap Timex watches, three Playboys and a box of fancy chocolate bars. It worked.
