Ex-Colombian general faces probe in disappearances

Ex-Colombian general faces probe in disappearances
Oct 3, 7:46 PM EDT

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- The retired Colombian police general who was security chief during former President Alvaro Uribe's first term faces a formal investigation in the unsolved disappearance 13 years ago of two human rights activists.

Mauricio Santoyo is already in a U.S. prison after pleading guilty last year to providing material aid to drug-trafficking paramilitary warlords in exchange for bribes.

Prosecutors say Santoyo will be questioned in the October 2000 disappearance of Angel Jose Quintero and Claudia Patricia Monsalve, who were last seen getting on a public bus in Medellin.

At the time, Santoyo led the city's anti-kidnapping police. The unit was found the following year to be illegally eavesdropping on the human rights group where Quintero and Monsalve worked.

Santoyo was Uribe's security chief from 2002 to 2005.
