Investigators of Colombias Prosecutor Generals Office on Wednesday arrested the president of a foundation that sought the demobilization of FARC members, but allegedly ended up producing fake testimonies over lawmakers ties to the guerrilla group.
Gustavo Adolfo Muñoz of the Fundacion Nueva Esperanza (New Hope Foundation) is facing charges for procedural fraud and perjury for falsely filing charges and testifying against two Liberal Party congressmen who he accused of holding top positions within the countrys largest and oldest rebel group.
Muñoz, a lawyer, had testified against Senator Luis Fernando Velazco who he accused of being a commander of a FARC elite fighting unit in southwest Colombia and had testified against former House Representative Gemma Rojas for having used FARC intimidation to be elected into congress.
According to weekly Semana, the attorney was also involved in the failed case against former Liberal Party deputy Sigifredo Lopez who was accused of having fabricated his own kidnapping.

Muñoz recently denied his foundation was used to falsely incriminate Uribe opponents and claimed the charges against him were part of a political persecution because of his loyalty to Uribe.

(24,010 posts)...like, here, that the phony "debt crisis" is about the debt, not about more looting and plundering by the uber-rich.
Our "Mad Tea Party" is as lunatic as the Uribe one in Colombia (and the Capriles one in Venezuela). One damned lie after another. The remarkable thing is how much ink these lunatics are given by the corporate media to spread their chaos of lies.
Glad to see Colombia's Prosecutor General's office is still on the job, and, though they may have been warned off of Bush Junta crimes in Colombia, have not allowed themselves to be threatened by Uribe and his criminal organization. In fact, they seem to be drawing the net around him tighter and tighter.
I wish we had a prosecutor here with their courage, who would go after Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld, but, don't ya know, "we need to look forward not backward" on the crimes of the very rich and very powerful? Steal a loaf of bread and get sent up for ten years and beaten and raped in our nightmare prisons. Slaughter a hundred thousand innocent people and steal billions, and live a life of luxury and protection.
That's the way of it, here.
But, for all the enormous damage that the corrupt, murderous, failed U.S. "war on drugs" deliberately inflicted on Colombia--on its people, on its institutions, on civil life--they still have prosecutors who dare to go after Uribe. That is amazing.
