4 Honduran police sentenced in students' killings

4 Honduran police sentenced in students' killings

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) -- A Honduran court has sentenced four police officers to long prison terms for the 2011 killing of the son of the National Autonomous University's president - a case that set off a campaign to clean up the Central American nation's corruption-plagued police force.

The tribunal sentenced one officer to 66 years in prison and the others to 58 year. The officers were found guilty of masterminding and carrying through the slayings of university president Julieta Castellanos' 22-year-old son and a 23-year-old friend.

The young men were last seen after being stopped at a police checkpoint outside the capital of Tegucigalpa. Their bodies were found the next day.

Castellanos led a crusade to overhaul the National Police and fire officers involved in drug trafficking, murder and kidnapping.
