SAN PEDRO GARZA GARCÍA, Mexico Socialite Cristina Sada Salinas was disgusted by the "decadence" she saw in this wealthy suburb of Monterrey, where drug cartel bosses and their families live alongside polite society.
A well-off woman who lives in a mansion and has eight employees, she is turning to a previously unthinkable option for the solution to crime and corruption that plagues Mexico: a leftist.
"He's the only hope we have," says Sada Salinas, 62, about former Mexico City mayor and presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Once branded in political ads as a danger to Mexico and compared to leftist strongmen such as Venezuela's Hugo Chávez, López Obrador is seen by some as the best choice among poor options. Polls show him in second place for Sunday's election, ahead of the candidate from the conservative party of outgoing President Felipe Calderón.
