Paraguay's Lugo changes tack ahead of summit

http://news.yahoo.com/paraguays-lugo-changes-tack-ahead-summit-184238476.html

....ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) — Paraguay's ousted president again shifted course on Tuesday, saying he has decided not to attend a South American summit where he had planned to protest his dismissal by Congress.

Fernando Lugo has surprised Paraguayans with conflicting announcements since the Senate voted to remove him from office last week. At first, he said he would comply and leave office. Then, he said he would fight the decision and make his case to the region's leaders.

Lugo said on Monday that he would travel to Mendoza, Argentina, for a summit of the Mercosur trade bloc. On Tuesday, Lugo said he had decided against it.

Ruben Penayo, an ally of Lugo and a former government spokesman, said Lugo preferred not to attend the meeting "so that the participating leaders wouldn't feel pressured by his presence."

I'm wondering if we will hear that the next elected president of Paraguay will not be legitimate because the election took place under a "coup" government.

As am I. I suppose it depends on whether the left or right wins. joshcryer Jun 2012 #5

without consequence?

Unless you mean, you don't want to hear what people say about the next election in Paraguay, in which case, I don't know why you are in this discussion forum because that is what we do here, discuss.

Of course, some people put their head in the sand when they don't want to hear what some people have to say, so perhaps Latin American policy isn't much of a concern for them.

If other Latin American states condemn them despite having new elections it will be disastrous for those people. That is extremely important.

And yet again, a Latin American president says one thing (Lugo said "Goodbye&quot and after the leftists in the west cry foul and bemoan he's changing his mind.
