Right-wing mortar attack on Venezuelan governor's house

Right-wing mortar attack on Venezuelan governor's house
By Staff Writers, teleSUR
Sunday, Feb 22, 2015

Children from the Special Rehabilitation Center were at the residence of Tachira’s Socialist governor at the moment of attacks by right-wing assailants. The attackers fired mortar at the building.

The governor of the Venezuelan state of Tachira, Jose Gregorio Vielma Mora denounced a series of attacks against his residence Thursday.

"Everyone alert, they are attacking the residence of the governor of Tachira and 157 children from the Special Rehabilitation Center are in there," Vielma Mora wrote on his twitter account.

The incident led to the deployment of dozens of police officers in the vicinity, however no victims or injuries were reported.

Authorities said that a group of 10 people were behind the attack, however no arrests were made. According to local reports, the small group belongs to the so-called “guarimberos,” the radical right-wing opposition groups who initiated violent protests that killed 43 people in the country last year.

Funding of Venezuelan opposition groups was a line item in the federal budget for the last 2 years.

What really gets my goat is that if the middle class and poor didn't pay their taxes, the US could NOT do this. The rich and wealthy corporations no longer pay the majority of taxes in the US. Without our funding, the uber rich couldn't or wouldn't afford to do this.

19. This seems to be a continuation of a previous story.
Tue Feb 24, 2015, 01:52 PM
Feb 2015

Previously, on Jan. 23 the Governor complained about difficulty with people who were, according to him, disruptive and extorting payments ("vacuna" or "peaje&quot . In addition he alleges that these people (in his words "supposed students&quot not only threatened the civilian population but also attacked police agents with mortars.

Perhaps sensing that just accusing students of having attacked Police with mortars wasn't enough, the Governor then goes on to add that the supposed students are in reality "mercenaries paid by smugglers and other foreigners".

He explains that

"There are millions of dollars and various countries behind these incidents, which he describes as 'terror'".

I would have imagined that such a sensational series of terroristic attacks, particularly involving 157 children would have garnered wide-spread attention world-wide. Foreign mercenaries attacking police in broad daylight with military grade weapons and then returning two weeks later to attack the Governor's residence with mortar sounds like something out of Syria or Mogadishu. However there seems to be no mention of it in the press except for several Venezuelan sources who picked up and reported the Governor's announcement word for word.

With such a paucity of facts you might wish to suspend judgement until more information becomes available.

The billionaire Putin and his cronies. It's results and not ideology that matter. VZ's oligarchs are just arguing who is going to be enriched off the oil. All the right buttons are going to be pushed here and there as a diversion, and people look for an old paradigm.

I just find it hard to say that a long time poster who to my mind is still a Democrat, would post things that are untrue and know it.

But I only speak TexMex and don't claim an ability to understand the written words. None of my very close hispanic friends cared for Chavez, which I didn't understand. We've got a tradition of being against colonialism and our knowledge of VZ, etc. is incomplete.

But my friends are able to read Spanish language newspaper accounts and know the details better than non-Spanish readers will. It's disappointing to see the people of VZ in dire straits no matter what it's called, when there is so much wealth there and it isn't getting to them.

I wish you would edit it.

Even though I am discouraged at what some at DU is call 'leftist' that unwittingly (we can only hope) ends up supporting oligarchical rule and disregards human rights.

One has to see the forest beyond the trees, break things down to their component parts, care about people and get out of the ivory towers. Like water seeks a level, people will find a way to get by, and it doesn't always fit into rigid ideology.

Name calling what people do to survive is of no help but only makes the speaker feel superior. Not talking of you, I'm talking of those who have taken sides at DU who support one ideological stance and ignore what is really going on.

And CTs and the idea of American power that rules the world get old. As if the world didn't know how to oppress, torture, kill and make empires long before we were a gleam in the founding fathers eyes. As if none of the natives of countries support their own brand of fascism.

It's no use turning a blind eye to the depths of humanity and pretend we are uniquely evil. America is an experiment and the world's clearing house of ideas, that is a good thing.

Some are really arguing for and against open discussions, and want to make the world and other nations fit our mold when we are not yet finished, we're always changing, too. So the world not going with the old paradigm of Marxism is a great offense to them. They forget that his was an analysis, but only a tool. His Das Kapital is no more holy writ than Mein Kampf was. Cult thinking cannot adapt to changes, even if it talks about it. Socialism and its predecessor Capitalism, is a process. What we are being confronted with is infinitely more dangerous and real, and that is Feudalism.

If the people's needs have been met, that is a good thing. If Chavez and Maduro were hellbent on creating a social democracy to lift up the poor, that is a good thing. But if there were ways to do that before, just buying a label won't work.

Some have said that the old rightist ollgarchs hated the poor, abused them to death, etc. But they have supporters, and some of them are young. We cannot honestly term them all regressive fascists, can we?

For example, in VZ abortion is illegal, HIV is spreading, and that is not a Democratic Party view. The leaders of the government now, as they were before, are selling the nation's chief export for nothing, not just to the USA.

None of these events are signs of a progressive or a liberal. To support such a system and think it will end well for all, or that VZ is the SA version of a social democracy, is magical thinking. .

their lock-out of workers, which temporarily tanked the economy, and their election boycott, as well as their attempt to remove Chavez with a constitutional referendum, which you would have learned already had you paid attention, that they were getting nowhere fast in their attempt to overthrow the elected President of the massive poor population.

That's when they moved directly to hide behind their youth, and didn't depart from it. From that point on, their children took over for them, with their "student uprisings."

Thanks for your comments on the ugliness, as well as prohibition at D.U. of calling out D.U. members by name, so easy to see that was "sincere," and your further comments to try to drive the disinformation home. It has been considered not acceptable here to call anyone out personally, but right-wingers do it, regardless. Part of their lack of character.

The racism and classism claims are clearly accurate regarding the culture. It has been well known from the first. Don't attempt to whitewash it all.

From the very moment I started posting in this site expressing my stance against the Chavista regime, I've been automatically labeled a right-wing fascist, especially by the user I mentioned. These are people who have no respect for others' opinions when they don't agree with them, and automatically label anyone disagreeing with them with absurd terms like "fascist" or "oligarch" or what-have-you. They've become so radically brainwashed by an ideology that they must defend it at all costs even when the leaders who are supposedly adhering to this ideology that they love to support show clear signs of authoritarianism and tyranny and behave just like the typical dictators that they love to cite so many times when trying to pin the blame on right-wing figures for Venezuela's current situation (as if Allende in '73 justifies all problems in Latin America as being caused by the US.)

I kinda feel sorry for them, really. It must be really hard to perceive the world in black and white. The worst thing is, I'm actually from Venezuela myself, and have been living in the US for some 4 years now. But I still revisit the country every so often, and most of my friends and family are still there, and yet they still think that they know more about the situation in Venezuela better than me or anyone else who's actually from there and knows the culture and native language of the country. And it's not just me, plenty of other DUers here have all been called all sorts of things by these ideologically blinded "experts" when we express our lack of support for this and many other regimes that stem from the same roots. Hell, they even support Putin's encroachment in Ukraine and the forced, unauthorized occupation of Crimea by the Russians, only because Putin is opposed to the US. How's that for crazy?

So as well-intentioned as you are, I don't feel I should keep quiet when pointing out the specific characters that have been falsely accusing me since Day 1 here. If they are going to be so proudly pointing us out for disagreeing with them, I have every right to do the same.

The Chavez-elite (known as the "Boligarchs&quot are enriching themselves every bit as much - or more - than the people in the government before Chavez. I also agree that the government is now in the business of desperately looking for diversions to try and keep the people of Venezuela from realizing just how bad their economic outlook now is.The fact that a Governor of a State feels obliged to push unfounded and uncorroborated horror stories about 'terrorist attacks' shows how desperate they are becoming. But you can only keep trying to divert people so long and eventually the tactic runs out of gas. Hopefully some change will take place that allows the economy to be corrected before it melts down (and takes thousands upon thousands of the poorest Venezuelans with it).

I think you may have misunderstood my last sentence in reply to another poster. I felt that that poster was already accepting as gospel the story put out by the Chavista Governor. It was my hope that after reading what I replied that poster might not come to a decision so rapidly about the potential truth or falsity of the information posted.

There is no one opinion among them. I can't speak for them, not having lived down there, don't know what it's like. I can make out the larger words in articles, but not the nuance. And the google translations are not really adequate, sadly.

I came to the LAG to learn more of the troubles there, like the murders of unionists and environmentalists who have been trying to do the right thing. The crimes being commited hurt us all.

But I'm no masochist, nor do I put up with abuse. And I respect the opinions of others who allow one to discuss things. The actions of some online have turned me off on their causes. Abuse is a logic failure, and I don't need it.

I've no problem with you as you've never answered me with disrespect. I am still in favor of social democracy, progressive and liberal values, but see a trend that is changing my view of those who are using that as a cover elsewhere. At this point, I admit being disappointed.

I'm not buying it anymore, my heart is for the people. That does not make me the bad guy.

from the horrible translations provided that just reiterated the governor's outlandish claim, it seems that some students were throwing rocks. Remember, this is a government who believe that writing a benign statement on a piece of paper constitutes a violent coup. The first authority of Táchira, José Gregorio Vielma Mora, state reported a new attack on the Official Residence of Governors, on Thursday afternoon, whose official headquarters launched mortars, despite the police presence nearby.

Through his twitter account, the regional president, warned of this new violent event in a city of San Cristobal, which also nervousness generated a group of 157 infants who were being treated at the Rehabilitation Centre "Dr. José Gregorio Hernández ", which operates within the facility.

By webmaster | 19/02/2015

Those are photos of students who were injured by the state police.

Again you fail to show any actual evidence supporting Vielma Mora's claim. No pictures of his residence with mortar damage (which is strange considering only the military would have access to such weaponry) or of kids fleeing the area, nothing. It's obvious you believe any BS from the chavista regime without them presenting any real proof to back their claims.
