The Five Receive the Title of Heroes of the Republic of Cuba
Feb. 23, 2015
On Tuesday Cuba will award the title of Heroes of the Republic to the five antiterrorists imprisoned in the United States since 1998, of which the final three were freed last December.
During the ceremony at the Palace of Conventions in Havana, which will be broadcast live on radio and television from 16:00 local time (21:00 GMT), the beginning of the War of Independence 120 years ago under the organization of José Martí, the Cuban National Hero, will be celebrated.
The antiterrorists Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, René González and Fernando González were arrested in Miami on Sept. 12, 1998 and sentenced to severe penalties including a double life sentence.
René and Fernando completed their full sentences, while Hernández, Labañino and Guerrero were freed last December 17 as part of the announced process of reestablishing diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba.
The Five, as they are known in the international campaigns for the freedom, penetrated groups of anti-Cuban terrorists based in the south of Florida.
