The Statement of Intent was signed between the US Department of Energy and Jamaicas Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining this morning.
Speaking with The Gleaner after the signing, Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell said the Government is optimistic particularly at the prospect of becoming a hub for distribution of LNG from the US to the rest of the region.
"Jamaica has attempted for many years to implement an LNG project, but we have been hindered because we just did not have access to liquefied natural gas. So, one of the achievements ... is the American support for us accessing natural gas, and in fact we have gone a little further in trying to identify Jamaica as a possible hub for allowing natural gas to be delivered to the rest of the region," said Paulwell.

(2,035 posts)Their Petrocaribe shipment is not gonna last forever considering how royally screwed the Venezuelan economy and petrol industry is. Expect to see this happen more and more with other Caribbean nations.

(6,837 posts)out of the country I believe we heard. I don't think the obvious necessity of Jamaica of securing a sustainable energy resource was the issue. Its the pain of the US making the easy political maneuver of stepping on Venezuela's toes. Obama could be shrewd politically and make diplomatic overtures to the Caribbean nations at the expense of Chavismo. That was going to happen anyway but the US seems to be proactive now. Who is the Caribbean really going to be more receptive to Obama or Maduro?
I think the Latin countries are slightly more united in their public diplomacy but its pretty weak. Too many pressing issues in about all the Latin American nations to worry about the spat between chavistas and the US.
