Mujica Offers Help in Colombian Peace Talks
Published 24 April 2015 (18 hours 19 minutes ago)

Senator Mujica will be heading to Havana soon to assist with the peace talks. Former Uruguayan president Jose Mujica offered to help out as a mediator in the Colombia peace talks in Havana.

Mujica said Thursday he will travel soon to Cuba to assist in the talks between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forced of Colombia (FARC). Specifically, Mujica said he wanted to talk to the FARC command.

“For me, the most important thing is to give support and lend a hand. If I can help in some way, I’ll help anyone. Now, I have to go at the request of the Colombian president, to discuss something with the FARC leadership,” he said. “The task is to be open … and support everything that one can, in a positive way,” Mujica said.

Later, Colombian president Juan Santos published a Tweet expressing his appreciation for Mujica’s willingness to help, but clarifying that he hasn’t nominated him to be a mediator (below). Spanish newspaper El Mundo had previously claimed that Mujica would mediate.
