Rural laborers in southern Bolivia saved two Andean condors who became extremely ill after consuming poisoned dog meat, an activist who assisted with the rescue effort said.

The residents of the small community of Chaupi Kh'atalla found the large birds on Sunday afternoon and took them to Sucre, Bolivia's constitutional capital and capital of the south-central province of Chuquisaca, for treatment by a private veterinarian, Ricardo Rivera told EFE Tuesday.

"It took nearly five hours of strenuous work to stabilize them because they were convulsing, had very severe infections (and) were getting weaker," Rivera, who helped the attending veterinarian, said.

An attempt was then made on Monday to enlist the support of the Chuquisaca provincial government and the Sucre mayor's office in finding a place for the condors to recover, but they both refused, citing a lack of facilities or expertise, the activist said.

The Andean condor, an endangered species native to South America, is a national symbol in Bolivia and other Andean nations.

Campesinos in southeast Bolivia rescued two Andean condors, after the endangered South American birds were poisoned by scavenging a dog that had also been poisoned, Diario Libre reported Tuesday.

According to an activist who helped save the birds, campesinos found the poisoned condors Sunday in a rural area and took them to a veterinarian in capital city Sucre.

“They managed to stabilize (the condors) after almost five hours of hard work ... they were convulsing, had symptoms of a very bad infection, they were fainting,” said activist Ricardo Rivera, who assisted in saving the two birds.
