Argentine authorities lure whale out of luxury Buenos Aires marina, hope it will return to sea

Argentine authorities lure whale out of luxury Buenos Aires marina, hope it will return to sea
Associated Press

August 4, 2015 — 3:00pm

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentine authorities have successfully guided a whale out of the marina of a glitzy area in Buenos Aires and hope that it will now return to sea.

Roxana Schteinbarg is the executive coordinator of the Whale Conservation Institute in Argentina. She tells The Associated Press that the whale had left the marina of the Puerto Madero neighborhood. Schteinbarg says the animal is now in the port area where the Rio de La Plata river feeds into the Atlantic.

The whale appeared in the marina Monday afternoon, periodically surfacing next to yachts while hundreds of onlookers gawked.

Schteinbarg said Tuesday the whale appears to be a 2-year-old humpback. She said it was likely making its first migration without its mother and got disoriented.

Whale lost in Buenos Aires nears sea
By AFP 12 hours ago in World .

A disoriented whale that turned up at a bustling Buenos Aires marina has nearly found its way back to the sea but is still stuck in fresh water, an official said Wednesday.

"It's at the mouth of the River Plate, in the area we call the ante-port. It's almost on its way. It's just one small step from swimming out to sea," a city hall spokesman told AFP.

The small humpback whale surprised passersby by surfacing Monday amid the yachts docked in Puerto Madero, the Argentine capital's upscale waterfront neighborhood.

It had apparently strayed off course, leaving the Atlantic Ocean and swimming up the River Plate estuary into a canal that serves the marina.

A lost whale surfaces in an upmarket marina in Buenos Aires on Monday. The whale was first spotted in the afternoon in Puerto Madero, Argentina, and news spread via social media, causing a crowd to gather along the water's edge. A police boat was called to try to herd the whale back to the Rio de la Plata river, which connects with the Atlantic

Can't tell you how much richer it seems with that thoughtful background.

Hope the young sojourner makes it back to his home safely.

Thank you, forest444.
