Guatemalan Corruption: Lawmakers Decline To Lift President's Immunity

Guatemalan Corruption: Lawmakers Decline To Lift President's Immunity

GUATEMALA CITY, Aug 14 (BERNAMA-NNN-EFE) -- Guatemala's Congress has declined to expose President Otto Perez Molina to possible prosecution for corruption.

. . .

On June 10, the Supreme Court formally asked Congress to name a committee to determine whether the president's immunity should be retired to open the door to a criminal prosecution.

The congressional panel ultimately recommended that the immunity be revoked. All but three of the 26 "no" votes on Thursday were cast by lawmakers from the president's right-wing Patriotic Party.

Authorities have arrested 17 people, both officials and private citizens, in the ISSS case, including agency chief Juan de Dios Rodriguez, who previously served as Perez Molina's private secretary.
