More than 80 percent of cases involving civilians injured or killed by law enforcement in Peru do not result in a verdict.
A man who became a paraplegic four years ago after police in Peru shot him twice in the back with high-caliber assault weapons will be denied justice if his case is not resolved by the end of next month, Mar Perez, a lawyer for the National Coordination of Human Rights, said Tuesday.
Campos was shot in 2011 while peacefully protesting against a mining project in Celendín, a town in northern Peru, that threatened to contaminate the local water supply.
Since Perus return to democracy in 2001, there have been dozens of cases of civilians injured or killed during protests in Peru, with members of law enforcement responsible for at least 97 percent of those injuries and deaths. In the vast majority of cases, there are no consequences for police who wield the baton or pull the trigger: just 17 percent of these cases have ever been processed.
