Uruguay: 'Little Possibility' of Venezuela Mercosur Suspension

Uruguay: 'Little Possibility' of Venezuela Mercosur Suspension
Published 26 November 2015 (4 hours 26 minutes ago)

A top Uruguayan official says there is no credible reason for Mercosur to suspend Venezuela.

Argentina will almost certainly fail in its bid to suspend Venezuela from the Mercosur trade bloc, Uruguay's Finance Minister Danilo Astori said Thursday.

“Mercosur's democratic clauses are aimed at responding to breakdowns of (state) institutions … and in respect to Venezuela, I don't think there has been a breakdown of institutions,” Astori said, according to HispanTV.

The minister added there was “little possibility” Argentina's incoming right-wing government would be able to convince other Mercosur leaders to turn against Venezuela.
