Houston Chronicle: From Hemingway to Beyonce, a look at Cuba's most famous visitors

Houston Chronicle: From Hemingway to Beyonce, a look at Cuba's most famous visitors

Gov. Greg Abbott disagrees with just about every single policy implemented by the Obama Administration. But when Obama announced renewed diplomatic ties with Cuba last December, Abbott never uttered a remark.

He must have sensed some business opportunities with the island nation that once was a frequent buyer of Texas exports. On Tuesday, Abbott will lead a trade delegation to Cuba in a surprising move that almost certainly explains the state government’s silence on the end of the more than 50-year-old embargo.

The conservative governor won’t be meeting with Castro. He’s on a trade mission, not a political visit. But he is looking to score some future opportunities for Texas as he tries to sell the Cubans on technology, tourism, communications and food commodities, writes the Houston Chronicle’s Mike Ward.

If the trip goes well, it also might force other red state governors to rethink their relationship with the last remaining Communist country in the Western Hemisphere.
