http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-34983075Plenty of countries have damaged or failing health systems. Few are like the Venezuelan.
This country, which holds parliamentary elections on Sunday, has oil reserves exceeding Saudi Arabia's.
That natural wealth provided hundreds of billions of dollars of export earnings for Hugo Chavez, the man who, for 14 years until his death in 2013, ushered in and then presided over a radical left Bolivarian Republic.
Under his successor, Nicolas Maduro's rule, though, the oil price has cratered. The IMF forecasts the country's economy will contract 10% this year, 6% next.
Those are the worst figures in the world, excluding Syria, and there's no data for Syria.
Actually, there's no official data from within Venezuela, because the Central Bank has stopped reporting its own economic figures.
So we have to rely on the IMF's estimate that inflation in Venezuela will be 159% this year and 204% next year. They are also the worst figures in the world.

(14,732 posts)the machinations of the CIA? Need proof? Well, a Coast Guard plane overflew Venezuelan territory for a few minutes some time ago. Proof positive of US involvement in the pharmaceutical coverage. But don't worry - there are plenty ready to "defend the glorious Bolivarian revolution" (maybe measured by when there are no pharmaceuticals left for the hospitals at all?)

(2,035 posts)How could I be so blind? Of COURSE Obama and the CIA are behind all this, even though the Chavista regime controls most means of production and distribution. And of course all those private pharmaceutical companies are in on this as well. They obviously want to let themselves go bankrupt by not selling their products to take Maduro down. I know cuz Zcomm and Absence of Logic and all those other left-wing conspiracy theory websites told me so!
