Unasur Expects USA Process Ends Blockade against Cuba
Havana, Jan 22 (Prensa Latina) The Union of South American Nations (Unasur) expects the restoration process of relations between Cuba and the United States leads to the end of the blockade against the island, stated today its general secretary, Ernesto Samper.
The also Colombian former president (1994-1998), who met today with the President of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba, Esteban Lazo, stated the organization is very interested on the process announced on December 17, 2014 by the presidents Raul Castro and Barack Obama.
On the other side he told reporters that, beyond the joy of this dialogue, it is necessary to eliminate two symbols of interference in the region: the economic, commercial and financial blockade and the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo in eastern Cuba against the will of its people and government.
According to Samper, the defense of the Caribbean nation is not only a matter of interest for Cubans, but for all South America, and it is a solidarity that has appeared in recent decades.
At the same time, he said that this restoration process with Washington should also lead to a new relationship of the USA with the South American country, just as Cuba is doing.
