Bolivia Says Regional Plot Exists to Bring Down the Left

Bolivia Says Regional Plot Exists to Bring Down the Left
Published 28 January 2016

Bolivian officials point out several similarities in the opposition campaigning tactics in Argentina, Venezuela and now Bolivia.

The Bolivian Defense Minister Reymi Ferreira said Wednesday that there was an “international plot” implemented against the “Yes” campaign in the country's upcoming constitutional referendum to be held on February 21.

The official said that there are many similarities in the opposition's campaign against Bolivia's referendum, proposed by leftist President Evo Morales, and the opposition campaigns in Argentina and Venezuela, which recently brought right-wing parties to power.

Ferreira added that these campaigns were part of a continental movement, which came to Bolivia to promote the “No” campaign for the proposed constitutional reform, which could allow President Morales to run for a third term.

Some of these common elements in the opposition campaigning in the region include predicting a supposed institutional breakdown and claiming that democratic rule in the country has deteriorated, using examples without basis in reality, said Ferreira.
