http://www.businessinsider.com.au/venezuela-implosion-2016-4---------------
It now seems inevitable that Venezuela, for decades touted as a socialist paradise, will disintegrate by the end of the year.
Its the ultimate case of Dutch disease, a country now rotten from depending far too much on the export of a primary product and, as a result, facing a currency so bloated it cant maintain productivity and competitiveness.
Now, the inevitable violence and chaos is starting to spill over. On Sunday, the Financial Times cited reports of the morgue in the capital city of Caracas overwhelmed with the stench of dead bodies piling up.
Theres been no official homicide data from Venezuela since 2006, but El Nacional is claiming 5186 murders in 2016 to date. One local think tank puts the rate at 92 killings per 100,000 citizens about 22,000 Australians a year in local terms, or 84 murders every weekend in Sydney.
Seafood soup $175 at the Bolivarian price or about $1.50 at black market
Parrilla for 2 $700 at the chavista exchange rate or $5.50 at black market
Liver and onions $135 Bolivarian price or about $1.15 black market
Black pepper pork chop $157 at the revolutionary exchange rate or $1.25 at black market

(16,423 posts)1. I read an article about crime in Venezuela about a month ago.
It said, part of the problem is that the police doesn't really care about the crime. No cop is going out there and is willing to roll up his sleeves and risk his life when all he can get as a reward is now-worthless money.
I don't think that Venezuela's crisis will culminate in one drastic event. The people are already hyped up: There is no additional force to be unleashed to topple the current balance of powers.
Instead, both opposing forces stay at a dead-lock and the crisis will crawl on slowly. It won't be a dramatic event that triggers change, it will be the insight that things can't keep going like this, like they have gone for years.

so they will try anything to stay in power
