EIGHT former senior military officers will face trial for crimes against humanity in Guatemalas 36-year dirty war, a judge has ruled.
Claudet Dominguez ordered on Tuesday that the eight be tried over the discovery of the mass grave of 565 indigenous Mayan people in January.
The gruesome find was made at what is now the headquarters of the Peacekeeping Operations Training Regional Command in Coban, the capital of the Alta Verapaz department.
Among the eight are ex-army chief of staff Manuel Benedicto Lucas Garcia, who is the brother of a former president, former interior minister Byron Barrientos Diaz and former intelligence agent Cesar Augusto Cabrera Mejia. If convicted, they face up to 50 years in jail.
At least 245,000 people were killed or disappeared in the 1960-96 civil war that followed the 1954 US-run invasion and coup against president Jacobo Arbenz.
