A man accused of murdering his wife in Atascocita was formerly a high-ranking police commander in a Mexican border state that has for years been wracked by drug-cartel violence and corruption that has pushed people from both sides of the law to seek refuge in Texas.
As head of police operations for the state of Tamaulipas, which hugs deep South Texas, Rogelio Homero Flores had ties to disgraced former governor Eugenio Hernandez, who remains a fugitive from corruption charges filed by federal prosecutors in Corpus Christi.
The current Tamaulipas state police administration Wednesday confirmed Flores' former post, from about 2005 to 2010, and noted he had nothing to due with the current leadership.
. . .
The case began when Flores' brother called 911 to say Flores had called him and said he just shot his own wife at the couple's home. He also said that he had their 12-year-old son, and was headed to Mexico.
