Brazil Supreme Court releases former billionaire Batista from jail

Brazilian Supreme Court justice Gilmar Mendes ordered the release from jail of former mining and oil magnate Eike Batista, once the country's richest man, ahead of his trial on corruption charges, the court said on Friday.

Batista has been jailed since Jan. 30 when he voluntarily returned to Rio from New York after four days as a fugitive. He is expected to stand trial along with an ex-Rio de Janeiro governor who allegedly took millions in bribes from the former billionaire.

The judge said that although grave, the crimes Batista stands accused of did not involve violence or threats to others and did not justify keeping the former tycoon in detention while legal proceedings advance.

Federal prosecutors accuse Batista, former governor Sergio Cabral and seven others of facilitating graft and hiding illegal funds in offshore shell companies.

What a shame. The 1% worked hard enough on taking over, for years, didn't they? Judi Lynn May 2017 #2

It's like the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff has opened a Pandora's box. All imaginable disgraces are now taking place. Well, we warned it would happen.

BTW, good to see you, Judi. Missed you.

Since the people themselves will never elect 1% candidates, they have to scheme, plot, lie, cheat, steal, and often get violent to seize control back from the democracy.

It was horrible seeing them hammering the elected government all that time, with their expensively financed "protests" over and over again, as the racist elites partied in the streets on fair weather days, taking photos of themselves, getting a lot of sun, having a great time with their mass produced materials, shirts, huge plastic yellow ducks, street performers, musicians, etc., etc., etc.

It's tremendous seeing you, OBenario4. You definitely have not been even slightly forgotten, we've wondered a lot about how things were going in Sao Paulo, and what you were seeing in government events. (Also, the trial runs of the cancer drug under study there, too.)

It really burns me up knowing they got by with stealing Dilma from her elected position, and did it by lying and scheming. I'm really, really hoping she will most definitely get the last laugh, in the end, along with her supporters.

Most surely missed reading your comments here! Great to see you!
