Argentina seeks Antigua bank account information in massive bribery probe

ST JOHN’S, Antigua -- Argentine prosecutors are asking their counterparts in Antigua and Barbuda to share information about accounts at a local bank that was used by Brazilian multinational construction company Odebrecht SA to pay bribes in a massive international corruption scandal.

Argentine officials are seeking data from Meinl Bank (Antigua) Ltd, said Anthony Armstrong, Antigua’s director of public prosecutions. The request was made on behalf of a prosecutor investigating potential kickbacks in the construction of an underground railway between Buenos Aires city and the province, Bloomberg News reported.

In the largest foreign bribery case in history, Odebrecht, along with a Brazilian petrochemical company, Braskem SA, pleaded guilty last December and agreed to pay a combined total penalty of at least $3.5 billion to resolve charges by authorities in the United States, Brazil and Switzerland arising out of their schemes to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes to government officials around the world.

According to its admissions, Odebrecht engaged in a massive and unparalleled bribery and bid-rigging scheme for more than a decade, beginning as early as 2001. During that time, Odebrecht paid approximately $788 million in bribes to government officials, their representatives and political parties in a number of countries in order to win business in those countries.

His family is linked to Meinl Bank because they arranged a massive tax evasion move (up to $100 million) on their part dating from 2014 - and she's the only one asking questions.

Unfortunately, Macri controls most of the judges in Argentina - such that this has little chance of being taken up in court (plus, they're too busy pursuing trumped-up charges against Macri's leading opponent, former Pres. Cristina Kirchner - who's leading in all polls by double digits).

Thank you for posting this, Judi.

Looks as if they've decided to go for broke, take everything they can possibly manage, and fortify themselves by gaining control of the country's military, and courts.

Alejandra Gils Carbo must be driving Macri and company insane, being one who won't bend to them. Good things don't happen to people who can't be bought, or coerced, unfortunately. I deeply hope there is a large group of quiet, but powerful people who are keeping track of events who will be able to step forward when the time is right to wrest back the power from these criminals.

Best wishes to Ms. Gils, hope she will sail through unscathed by Macri's hatred.

Had not heard about Cristina Kircher's current status. This is wonderful to hear. Thank you, sandensea.

(By the way, the link you posted is just as horrific today as it was when it was posted. These criminals are truly aggressive. It's so easy to despise them.)
