Venezuelan opposition seeks unofficial July 16 vote on Maduro plan

By Diego Oré and Eyanir Chinea | CARACAS

Venezuela's opposition said on Monday it plans to organize an unofficial referendum later this month on President Nicolas Maduro's controversial plan to rewrite the constitution via a special new congress.

The Democratic Unity coalition, which is starting a fourth month of street protests against the socialist government it decries as a dictatorship, will organize the symbolic vote for July 16 aiming to delegitimize the already unpopular Maduro.

Venezuelans will also be asked to opine about role of the military in "recovering constitutional order," the formation of a new government, and whether they want general elections, the opposition coalition announced in a press conference.

Their planned vote, likely to be ridiculed by the government, would be two weeks ahead of a planned July 30 national election proposed by Maduro for a Constituent Assembly with powers to reform the charter and supersede other institutions.

He has proven over and over his disdain for democracy. Why would he allow them to vote their conscience?

Besides, he enjoys setting his brownshirts upon any gathering of opponents of Chavismo. This gives him another excuse.
