Police believe thieves steal Venezuela zoo animals to eat them

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-venezuela-animals-idUSKCN1AW2NN

MARACAIBO, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela authorities are investigating the theft of animals from a zoo in western state of Zulia that were likely snatched to be eaten, a further sign of hunger in a country struggling with chronic food shortages.

A police official said two collared peccaries, which are similar in appearance to boars, were stolen over the weekend from the Zulia Metropolitan Zoological Park in the sweltering city of Maracaibo near the Colombian border.

"What we presume is that they (were taken) with the intention of eating them," Luis Morales, an official for the Zulia division of the National Police, told reporters on Tuesday.

The chaotic collapse of the country's socialist economic model has created chronic food shortages that have fueled malnutrition and left millions seeking food anywhere they can find it, including in trash cans and dumpsters.

than zoos. I'm sorry, but anyone who steals any animals for food deserves to be shot on sight.

Why not shoot the people who are starving the people?

These people are literally starving to death. They have lost on average 19 lbs over the last year. Its not like they WANT to eat giraffe and zebra. Venezuelans love a wide variety of non-meat foods. Ever had an arepa? It is the staple carb of the Venezuelan diet. Yet the corn meal to make them has become scarce due to the Chavista's malfeasance with the economy. Before the Chavistas, Venezuela exported food. Now, most of it is imported because they nationalized the farms and made grain more expensive to produce than the end product is worth.

Shooting people because they have NOTHING to eat? I certainly wouldn't begrudge you if you ate a stolen zoo animal if you were starving. I would hate to see you shot on sight.

I mean, it's not just zoo animals suffering, it's the whole population of Venezuela, which leaves them with no options for food or medicine or security. What would you do if you were in that situation?

"What we presume is that they (were taken) with the intention of eating them"

I'm sure they've found strong evidences to make such claim, such as forks, knives, napkins, and pans.

Baad boys: Police recapture goat stolen from Minnesota park

The Associated Press St. Paul May 5, 2017

"Police say two St. Paul officers were patrolling Indian Mounds Park about 1 a.m. Friday when their squad car was nearly struck by a speeding SUV. The officers gave chase and when they stopped the vehicle after 2 miles they were surprised to find a frightened goat in the cargo area behind the backseat.

Police spokesman Steve Linders says the stolen goat, Gordy, was one of 30 that had been situated in the park earlier in the week to eat invasive weeds.

"One day your job is to reduce invasive weeds and get rid of unwanted vegetation and the next you're on a high speed chase. Pretty frightening," Linders said, adding that the goat did not appear to be harmed.

The driver and three passengers in the SUV jumped out and started running after the SUV stopped, Linders said. Officers caught two of the four people. Two 29-year-old men are being held on a possible charge of gross misdemeanor theft, according to police."

Later reports indicated this goat was stolen for the purpose of inviting it to dinner... as the "special, honored guest".

So yes, people DO steal animals to eat them in the United States.

Next red herring? Or do you suppose the NPR and its affiliates is just another anti-Chavismo mouthpiece?
