Chavistas resorting to Capitalism to survive Chavismo? It's tetas time!

Pedestrians sell food in "teticas"

Given the lack of cash and the low purchasing power of Venezuelans, peddlers implemented the practice of selling food in small portions called "teticas." In the redoubt of Petare, in the boulevard of Catia and Candelaria there are between 5 and 6 continuous stalls in which the sachet is sold with 4 tablespoons of coffee, 4 sugar and 4 milk to 10,000, 9,000 and 13,000 bolivares, respectively. Rice and oil, which contain the equivalent of a medium and small cup, cost 17,000 and 15,000 bolivars.

"It's a rebusque. We get two boxes CLAP (Local Committees for Supply and Production) and from there we take a packet of milk, another of sugar and two of rice that we pack and sell, "explained a vendor in Petare, who asked not to mention her name.

The labor advisor Maryolga Girán pointed out that this form of retail, which also entails health problems due to the way food is packed and stored, is a recomposition of the informal economy that adds to the bachaquerismo within the reality of hyperinflation and the shortage of regulated products.

He added that with the bags, peddlers quickly replenish inventories, because it is easier to sell in portions at a price that impoverished consumers can afford. That does not happen if it is a complete package of the product.

Trade unionist Dick Guanique warned that peddlers have become suppliers of cash. He assured that they sell the tickets to those interested with a surcharge of 15% and 20%. "Due to the lack of cash, tickets have become another commodity," he said.

He indicated that the kilo of sugar costs 90,000 bolivars if the payment is in cash, but if it is canceled in plastic the price is 170,000 bolivars. He specified that street vendors represent 30% of the population of workers in the informal sector of the economy.

Teticas (small "breasts", or tetas because of the shape of the bag used to sell such small quantities) are the new norm. CLAP boxes and bags are Chavismos answer to rations during war time. They are sold (to faithful Chavistas only) at a huge loss. Recipients then resell the divided rations for a huge markup.

The problem now is, Venezuela is running out of bags, as they are expensive to import.
