Human rights groups seeks to strip Danny Glover of honorary UNICEF ambassadorship

Human Rights Foundation seeks to strip Danny Glover of the title of UNICEF ambassador
Apr 2, 2018 12:30 pm

Human Rights Foundation (HRF) condemns the visit of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Danny Glover to Venezuela in order to persevere in his continued efforts to mask the crimes of dictator Nicolás Maduro; and calls UNICEF executive director Henrietta H. Fore to strip Glover of its honorary title.

Glover praised the regime led by Maduro for "contributing to human progress through education, health and other aspects that honor humanity" in a speech delivered at the end of March in Caracas. Meanwhile, the economic policies of the dictatorship have led more than 30 million Venezuelans to the worst humanitarian crisis in the country in its 200-year history. In 2017, Venezuelans lost an average of more than 10 kilograms in weight due to famine and malnutrition. According to the NGO Caritas, 33 percent of the 10 million children in the country suffer from delayed growth.

Press release / Human Rights Foundation

"For more than a decade, the Venezuelan regime has actively invested funds and efforts to make up its reputation as a violator of human rights. One of the strategies implemented by the dictatorship has been the recruitment of supporters and spokespersons between world-famous celebrities, including Sean Penn, Lukas Haas, Jamie Foxx and Harry Belafonte. And these quasi state agents have not disappointed in their highly publicized support for this brutal regime. But the biggest insult so far has been Danny Glover's trip to Venezuela with nothing more and nothing less than the stamp of the highest office of the United Nations for children. The unfortunate and shameful tenor of his statements not only deserves the highest scrutiny,

"Glover's unworthy behavior in favor of the Venezuelan regime is the result of a greed that apparently knows no limits. In 2007, the actor received approximately 20 million dollars to produce a film that was never filmed. To date, Glover has made no attempt to return the money to the Venezuelan people. The payment was nothing more than a bribe disguised as a film production budget to assure Glover as a public relations agent of the dictatorship. By not registering as an agent of a foreign government, Glover has done much more than violate US laws: it has completely lost its credibility as a spokesperson for human rights and children's rights."
