Barter returns to Venezuela as the payment of choice for small business
THE TRICK RETURNS AS A METHOD OF PAYMENT
APRIL 03, 2018
Osman Rojas | THE PRESS.- The barter is back. The lack of cash on the streets and the constant scams that have been presented with bank transfers makes people accept anything as a method of payment. Cleaning implements or items of the basic basket is the most demanded by service providers.
Manuel Carrasco, professional barber, perfectly exemplifies the return of barter. The man, whose business is located in El Cují, has no point of sale and only accepts transfers from his own bank. If the person is a client of another entity can spend 60 thousand bolivars (what is worth the cut) in the Chinese in front and take things.
"
I ask them for yucca, banana, corn or anything else they need. It is a win to win because they are happy and I know the needs of my house," he says.
Carrasco says he started bartering a little over a month ago. According to his testimony there was a day in which not a single client attended for the lack of cash and that led him to make the decision.
"I make money to buy food and if people can not give money then they can give me food," he says.
Similar is the story of Mario Guanipa, a 25-year-old boy who repairs telephones in the center of the city. The guy stopped working with transfers because he was swindled a couple of times and now he agrees to pay for his technical review with charcuterie.
A kilo of cheese is worth 700 thousand and that's what I charge.
People can pay with mortadella or anything else they need," the man says, and right now, Venezuela has become a country of exchanges to survive.
