Venezuelan diplomat expelled last month now wants to stay as exile
Venezuelan diplomat expelled from the US handles his stay in that country

Washington.- A senior Venezuelan diplomat expelled from the United States last week continues in the country, despite being ordered to leave in 48 hours.
Jarlet Sánchez, a career diplomat who served as Venezuelan vice-consul general in Houston, was declared persona non grata on May 23 in retaliation for President Nicolás Maduro's decision to expel the charge of business Todd Robinson after the elections.
But a US official and another individual familiar with the case said that Sanchez has not yet left the United States. The two people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to testify on the matter publicly, AP reported.
Foreign diplomats in the United States who do not follow orders to leave can be forcibly expelled, according to an old legal opinion from the Justice Department.
The Associated Press learned that Sanchez hopes to stay permanently in the United States by applying for a residence for immigrants known as a "green card" under a little known clause of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This clause, which is known as Section 13, says that people who enter the country as diplomats can request a change in their immigration status and, if granted, obtain permanent residency.
